Tonight, after dinner, Jack Barbour sits at his desk in the living room. He has separated his bills into three neat piles; the 'must' pile, the 'pay next week' pile, and the 'can wait' pile, but a disturbing thought has just occurred to him, so he goes to the foot of the stairs to call Betty. but things are quieting down upstairs now, as the six little girls are finally in their beds. He turns away, and returning now to the desk, he is girding himself to tackle his problem when the back door opens and Clifford comes into the living room.
