William Herbert 'Pinky' Murray straightens up and surveys his day's accomplishment in his grandfather's garden. It has grown quite dark and he is tired. He breathes a long sigh, and looks forlornly out across the golden gates, where the lights of the great bridge are just coming on. Across that bridge, on the other side of the bay, is Belvedere, where Eunice lives. Yesterday, his golden dream - marriage to Eunice and the riches to follow - was shattered by her father, who offered Pinky nothing but a modest job in one of his lumber camps...
