It's after dinner now in Seacliff, San Francisco. At Jack Barbour's house next door to the family home, Elwood Giddings - Teddy's fiance - has been a dinner guest for the evening. He is now upstairs in the nursery, reading a story to Jack's sick little daughters. Betty comes downstairs and finds Jack stretched out on the davenport in the living room, so urges him to get up because he has a guest. But Jack is just too tired!
