Lieutenant Hank Murray arrived at his mother's house thirteen doors from the Barbour family home in Seacliff, San Francisco, and goes straight into the great front hall, calling for his mother. She has been interviewing housekeepers for the great, cavernous home, and right now is sitting in the warmest room of the house, staying warm. She tells Hank about a telegram she has received from Pinky.
