Up to the year 1832 the body snatchers terrorised England. According to the law only four bodies a year could legally be supplied to the surgeons for anatomical study. But the study of surgery had to go on. In hundreds of medical schools all over England perfectly reputable doctors were compelled to buy bodies and ask no questions. In 1828 first the scandal of Burke and Hare who found grave robbing too slow and murdered 16 persons in order to supply Dr Knox of Edinburgh and so out of basic good purpose sprang the evil of the body snatchers…
