Mrs Soames hired a private detective named Lou Delfat to spy on her husband who she believed was cheating on her.  She had already paid Delfat $2000 when he was discovered dead. Delfat could be described as a tawdry little hustler and according to his wife there were many who could have killed him for any number of reasons. Now female police lieutenant       Lucille Miller was investigating the case and with no leads, no clues, no motives and no tangible suspects there seemed to be  nowhere to go.
