The Black Gold Murder Case originated in a Dude Ranch in the Southwest and began when a man named Anderson was shot. Philo Vance summonsed by the owner of the ranch arrived to find a scratch on the saddle of the horse the murdered man rode, which leads him to believe that Anderson was killed at a distance from where he was found. When oil was discovered in the vicinity of the Ranch it confirmed Vance’s theory for a motive.
