Johnny gets a call from Luke Shaw, from Home Office National Insurance Company, who hold a policy on Miss Judith Thompson who was recently killed. Somebody shot her once in the chest with a .38, and the insurance company want Johnny to head to San Francisco to investigate the case. The first line of investigation takes him to an airfield and a test pilot.
