Carl Warner isn’t a young man but he doesn’t mind that, he wasn’t very happy when he was young but he is happy now. He has his beautiful young wife and his canary birds. Then one night Chester Brule turns up at his house. Brule had been an attendant at Crag Mount asylum for the insane where a homicidal inmate had escaped, a murderer who’s impulses to murder where only kept down by the singing of canaries. Brule threatened to uncover Warner unless he paid him $5000.
