The scene opens in the Los Angeles county jail in summer 1925. Herb Wilson is a notorious mail robber awaiting transfer to St. Quentin to begin a life term. Chuck Wagner and Sam Sandberg are being held under charges for robbery and the theft of $19,000 from an oil company messenger. They are planning on escaping and robbing a United States mail truck.
