Peter Standish who inherited the house in Berkeley Square in London in 1939 from Mr Pettigrew. He finds a diary belonging to the man in a portrait on the wall a distant relative who was also called Peter Standish and they bear a strong resemblance. The diary is Peter’s passport in to the eighteenth century and the life of his ancestor.
