The scene of the play is a small tropical island where we meet Ginger Ted a dissolute beachcomber played by Charles Laughton. Jean Hersholt plays the part of his friend and the Dutch controleur of the island. Ginger’s enemies are two people who are devoting their lives to humanitarian service, Martha Jones played by Elsa Lanchester and her brother Owen enacted by Reginald Owen.

Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester played the same roles in the 1938 movie which was filmed under the title of Vessel of Wrath.
