The story begins on January 8th, 1815. It is early morning, and the war with the British which began in 1812 is over. However, the people of Louisiana have not heard the news, and the battle of New Orleans has not yet started. But it soon will. The Americans cling to the earthworks, and the Rodriguez Canal, awaiting the attack. It is a cold morning in the heart of the southern winter.
