Rudolph Besier has called his play about the Barretts of Wimpole Street a comedy but it is also a romance, a melodrama and a family chronicle. There’s a certain unquenchable charm about Mr Besier’s portrait of the Barretts, 3 daughters and 6 sons living on Wimpole Street with the domestic despot who is there father. And the romance between Elisabeth Barrett and poet Robert Browning deserves and owns a unique place in great story telling.
