Francois La Villard was a detective of some note in his own country of France and in 1889 La Villard came over to London to discuss with Holmes the difficulties of translating some of his monographs in to the French language. At the time Dr Watson was in the early days of his marriage and this fact combined with a busy practice meant that he saw very little of his old friend.
