James Clarence Withencroft is forty years old, in perfect health and has never had a day’s illness. By profession he is an artist. Not a very successful one, but he earns enough money from his black and white work to meets his immediate needs.
His only near relative, a sister, died five years ago, so there is nobody in particular to hear this manuscript - accept you. Because of the peculiar circumstance of which you will hear he has the strong premonition that he will not live to tell anyone about it.
