Adolph Ochs, at the age of just 19, borrowed $250 from his family to purchase a controlling interest in the Chattanooga Times, becoming its publisher. After several years experience, he heard from a reliable source that the New York Times had hit upon hard times, and so, due to its financial losses, he managed to secure the deal of the century, purchasing the New York Times for just $75,000.
