The speed of aeroplanes and the speed of ocean liners, the speed of express trains and the speed of automobiles, the speed of the telegraph, the telephone, the radio all the flashing dynamic force in modern communication and transportation is part of the American heritage of foresight and enterprise. One of the most thrilling manifestations of this heritage occurred in the middle of the 19th century when captains of our young men the American clipper ship carried the American flag, American commerce and ideas to every port in the seven seas.
