The story begins with the ending, and a local county newspaper editor, Sam Dornan, has been captured and is being taken to his execution. He has led the underground resistance to the Nazi rule in occupied Canada, continuing to publish his newspaper urging the Canadians to join him in rebellion. However, after the Nazis begin to kill the townsfolk, Dornan is surrendered by his own people.
