Inspector Denton and Barton Drake had been invited to attend a political convention in a hotel near New York. While at a concert in the hotel garden they see Alfred Emerson, who was set to be the next governor. He looks to be in trouble, he seems to be sick but then he walks in to the hotel unassisted. Then they notice the beautiful young Mrs Emerson arguing with a dark haired young man. A few minutes later news reaches the inspector and Drake that Alfred Emerson has committed suicide.
