The story began in New York mystery when writer Barton Drake receives word that a suicide had taken place at the home of senator Asa Clark at 123 West Cameron Street and that murder was suspected. Inspector Denton was also aware of the tragedy and would probably get in touch with Barton Drake sooner or later so Drake decided to go to the scene of the crime.
