Returning to the house on 11th Street, Jessie went to the phone in the hall, and sat down at the little table. She hesitated for a moment as she thought of her visit to Brett's house early this morning. She'd gone by to tell him that she could spend some time with him this afternoon, but the failure of their plan yesterday, had left Jessie's lover in a surly and resentful mood. They had quarrelled, and he had cruelly told her that he would be having lunch with another woman that afternoon!
