Charles II, the Merry Monarch left his brother James II to succeed him on the throne. James was the second surviving son of Charles I, and was born on 15th October 1633. A short time before his father's execution, he escaped to Holland, and from there he went to France. After the restoration of the Stuarts, James returned to England, was recognized as the Duke of York, and made a Lord High Admiral of England.
