The sergeant major carried a monkey's paw around with him that had had a spell put on it by an old fakir in India. The fakir had made it so that three people could have three wishes but those people would have pause to wish that they hadn't had the wishes granted. But surely if you wished for things that can't have any bad luck about them everything would be okay? When the third person wished for two hundred pounds to pay off his mortgage, he was granted the wish but at a very high cost.
