At the Hickin's farmhouse about a half mile from Farr Military Academy grounds, Mrs Hickins has just walked into the kitchen where her husband was eating supper, to tell him the bad news that three of his hens are missing. They begin to discuss other neighbours whose possessions had also seemingly disappeared, and Mr Hickin's decides to grab his gun, and wait in hiding for their hen thief.
