Veterans Day

Thursday 11th November 2010

Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. In 1919 President Wilson declared that the day should be commemorated with parades, public meetings and a pause of activities at 11:00am, saying the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory".

In 1926 Congress officially declared that the armistice should be marked with prayer and thanks and also come together in peaceful ceremonies with other peoples. It also asked that the U.S. flag be flown on all U.S Government buildings.

In 1953, Al King had the idea to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. So he began his campaign to turn Armistice Day into All Veterans Day. In 1954 congress amended this act and we now use this day to remember all our brave men who then and since lost their lives in war. It is commemorated as a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace.

There are some wonderful old-time-radio shows to remind us of the courage and bravery of our fighting men and women and Joy and I have put together an appropriate list for you.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
