Tips for Grandparents

It's Grandparents Day at the weekend, and us oldies are always in need of a good chuckle, so I couldn't resist sharing this with you when I saw it on social media.

GRANDPARENTS' ANSWERING MACHINE
Good morning. At present we are not at home, but please leave your message after you hear the beep:-
- If you are one of our children, dial 1 and then select the option from 1 to 5 in order of "arrival" so we know who it is.
- If you need us to stay with the children, press 2
- If you want to borrow the car, press 3
- If you want us to wash your clothes and ironing, press 4
- If you want the grandchildren to sleep here tonight, press 5
- If you want us to pick up the kids at school, press 6
- If you want us to prepare a meal for Sunday or to have it delivered to your home, press 7
- If you want to come to eat here, press 8
- If you need money, dial 9
- If you are going to invite us to dinner, or, taking us to the theatre - start talking, we are listening!!!"
Beeeeeppp...

Grandparents' Day wasn't introduced until the late 1970s, so there are no old time radio shows relating to this special day.

However, there was one show which popped into my mind. It's one of my all time favorite radio shows, called On Borrowed Time about a loving gramps who has to fend off death in the form of Mr Brinks, so that he can care for his orphaned grandson Pud.

There are a few versions of On Borrowed Time on RUSC, from Theater Guild on the Air, Best Plays, and Screen Guild Theater. They're all fabulous productions, so I hope you'll be able to find a moment to listen.

Over the weekend, give a thought to the folks in your own neighborhood, who maybe aren't fortunate enough to have family nearby. Perhaps there's someone who might appreciate a little company for half an hour, a helping hand in their home, or maybe you could even burn to CD a selection of old time radio shows from RUSC for them to listen to. You could make their day, month or even their whole year!

And remember, age is nothing but a number, and the best tunes are played on the oldest of fiddles. Enjoy!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
