Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison

Most people are familiar with the name Thomas Edison. He was an American inventor and businessman, credited with the invention of the electric lightbulb.

But it was not only his genius invention of a long-lasting bulb that lights our world today. In 1876, he also invented the carbon telephone transmitter “button”, which finally made telephony and long-distance calls practical, and commercially successful.

Significantly, this invention not only led to the development of the microphone, which made early radio possible, but the solid state “diode” or transistor which makes so many of today’s electronic devices possible.

On the 19th of May 1937, Cavalcade of America featured the life and work of Thomas Alva Edison.

Listening to this story, which you can hear on RUSC, it reminded me of several other radio plays about Thomas Edison; about him as a boy, growing up, and as a grown man.

Lux Radio Theater - Young Thomas Edison

Cavalcade of America - The Voice of the Wizard

Cavalcade of America - Thomas Edison the Man

Incredible But True - The Man Who Saw Everything

Duffy's Tavern - Patent on Electricity

So on his birthday this year, which falls on 11th February, why not listen to the whole life story of Thomas Edison, the man who gained the gratitude and admiration of the whole world for his genius inventions, which he created to make everybody’s lives easier and more enjoyable.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
