Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Well 19th March was officially the first day of spring and I don’t know about you but I am beginning to get that happy feeling that comes when spring is in the air.

The clocks went forward in March giving us that extra hour of daylight in the evening and there are definite signs of spring. The skies are bluer, the sun is shining and the winter woollies have been confined to the back of the wardrobe. The cheery daffodils are in full bloom and I already cut our lawn for the first time this year!

That’s the good side of spring but then there’s the annual spring houseclean! I guess it is an old habit but there is something about spring that makes you want to clean up the house and have a good old clear out or so Joy tells me.

Liz Cooper played by Lucile Ball in My Favorite Husband, is busy discussing the spring clean with her maid Katie who tells her the only way to get George to do anything is to shame him in to it. While cleaning out George’s den Katie finds some old love letters of George's that Liz had written him long ago. Liz decides to have a bit of fun with George by telling him a letter has arrived for him despite Katie warning her she’s playing with fire.

The Coopers aren’t the only ones spring cleaning, no, so are the Andersons in Father Knows Best, Phil Harris and Alice Faye and Jack Benny.

With spring here there’s a lot of house cleaning going on in Summerfield. The Great Gildersleeve has refinished his parlor furniture, Mr Peavey has sprayed his screens, Chief of police Gates has whitewashed the jail and even the Jolly Boys Club over Floyd’s barbers shop hasn’t escaped and while the paint is drying the boys are meeting at Judge Hookers house to help with his spring cleaning.

Of course if you can’t bear to get rid of anything in case you might need it some day or it’s too good to throw away you can always do like Fibber McGee and ram it all in to the hall closet!

As you can see, spring fever was very popular during the golden age of radio too - which is reflected in how many shows there are. I've put together a collection of the best ones, and you'll find these on a special radio station, right here on RUSC!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
