Presidents' Day

Presidents' Day

Two dates in February had historically, always been observed as separate holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and George Washington (Feb. 22).

However, in 1971, President Richard Nixon proclaimed there would be one single federal holiday, namely the Presidents' Day, which would be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America.

It has been 206 years since Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was born, and a recent Sotheby's auction has perhaps proven just how revered he was, and still is. A collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia was sold at the auction in Dallas, and fetched more than $800,000 in total - with a lock of the President's hair being sold for an incredible $25,000!

The lock of hair was removed by Surgeon General Joseph Barnes, shortly after Lincoln was assassinated on 14th April 1865. I'm not sure how I feel about that. How about you?

(As always, please do feel free to add a comment below - I'm sure there will be many different opinions about this, which makes for some interesting debates!)

Here on RUSC, Joy and I have found some rather less macabre ways to remember our past Presidents. There are many patriotic tales to be told in old time radio shows, of which we have amassed a vast collection.

So, to keep with the theme and to have a little fun - let's embrace our democratic right today, and take a vote on what you want to see this Presidents' Day on RUSC!

Check out the poll to the right.  ----------->>>

I solemnly swear that I will adhere to the wishes of the voting majority, and these results will be published on Monday.

Make your vote count!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
