Philip Marlowe In Lux Radio Theater

Philip Marlowe In Lux Radio Theater

While we're discussing actors who have portrayed Raymond Chandler’s famous detective Philip Marlowes how about Robert Montgomery? In 1947, the same year that The Adventures of Philip Marlowe began its airing on radio MGM produced Raymond Chandler's story Lady In The Lake which was both directed by and starred Robert Montgomery.

Later in February 1948 Lux Radio Theater presented its version starring Robert Montgomery as Philip Marlowe and Audrey Totter as Adrienne Fromsett the same roles they played in the 1947 film version.

RUSC friend Cassie said, I have seen the film and it is as close to radio as movies can actually get because the entire film unfolds with the Camera playing Philip Marlowe with Mr. Montgomery's voice, of course, but the only time we actually see Montgomery is when he looks in a mirror. The rest of the time the viewer is Marlowe, or at least sees everything from his viewpoint. Very effective technique for a detective story I thought. By the way Mr. Montgomery was the father of Elizabeth Montgomery of BEWITCHED fame.

Well today on RUSC thanks to John Osterholm who kindly provided us with a copy you can sit back and enjoy the Lux Radio Theater hour-long version of Lady In The Lake.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
