Pabst Blue Ribbon Sponsors Mercury Summer Theater 1946

The answer to the recent RUSC poll question "Which of the following radio shows were sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon beer?" was in fact all of them.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer sponsored Blue Ribbon Town from March 27th, 1943 through August 5th, 1944, The Life of Riley from 1949 to 1951, Truth or Consequences in 1955 and 1956 and the least remembered, Mercury Summer Theater On The Air in 1946.

There were 15 episodes in total running from June 7th through September 13th 1946 and reuniting Orson Welles as producer, writer, director and star with original Mercury Theater players including Agnes Moorehead in Abednego, The Slave and Alice Frost in Jane Eyre.

You can already listen to Mercury Summer Theater's The Hitchhiker on RUSC and I will be adding other episodes including Hell On Ice about the disastrous first expedition to the artic, the classic story Moby Dick and Scenes From King Lear.

The episode broadcast on 23rd August 1946 included two stories, I'm A Fool and The Tell Tale Heart written by Edgar Allen Poe. The reason I highlight this is that for the forthcoming Halloween Joy and I will be focusing on shows featuring the macbre stories by Poe. Watch this space!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
