New Server

This Was The Week Of The New Server

The new all-singing all-dancing server has lots of benefits

On Monday and Tuesday of this week I had to get my toolkit out to install a brand new main server for RUSC. One of my mottos is "if I ain't bust don't fix it", but my other motto is "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do". So, off I went with the beautiful new server in the trunk of my car down to the hosting center.

I was worried that there would be some major downtime (due to me not having a clue what I'm doing), but thankfully a good friend offered to help out and the changeover went really smoothly, probably due to the fact that I spent most of the time in the local Starbucks so that my friend could get on with the job unhindered.

I'm really grateful to everyone for their patience and hope that the switchover didn't cause any problems at your end or interrupt your listening pleasure for too long.I know how much some of you rely on your daily listening (me too) and so we did our best to keep the outage to the absolute minimum.

The new server has several benefits. For starters it's about ten times faster than the previous one, which means that web pages will load quicker, any searches you perform will be faster, and the overall speed of doing anything on the site will have improved. Not that it was slow before. The old server has been a faithful friend over the past few years, but this new one really is of the all-singing-all-dancing variety.

Another benefit is that there's lots more space so the daily updates will continue uninterrupted for a long time to come. The old server was running out of memory (a bit like me at times) so it will be a relief to not have to worry about that dreaded day when I was going to get the "out of disk space" message.

And there's another benefit too. If you're amongst the many loyal RUSC-On-Demand users there's a great bit of news and that is that thanks to the extra processing power on the new server, new shows will be added to the playlist selections at the same time as they appear on the main part of the site.

There are lots of other benefits too, but I'm sure you don't want me to bore you with all the techie details.

The only issue at the moment is that some members are having to enter their username and password details a lot more frequently than before. I'm working on this now and should have it fixed by next week.

Ah well, I best go and get reviewing lots more shows now that there's all of that extra space to fill.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
