Muvo N200

Muvo N200

My new gadget

Joy can’t understand why I get so excited about little electronic gadgets. It’s probably a man thing, but I’m sure there must be women who also get excited by such things - or maybe women are just far more sensible and have better things to think about.

Anyway, I bought a new gadget on Tuesday evening and as these things go it has been pretty much love at first sight. It’s only been a couple of days, but the way I feel now you’d have a major job trying to take it away from me.

What is the new gadget?

It’s a great little MP3 player called a Muvo V200 and it is made by Creative.

This is a really neat player for old time radio fans for several reasons.  Here are just some of them - in no particular order.

The Muvo lets you delete files you no longer want. Other players only allow you to do this when you are sat at your computer, but the Muvo lets you do it whilst you are on the move. I’ve found this to be really useful as it has let me copy lots of shows onto the player and then delete them when I’ve listened to them. This saves me having to remember what I’ve listened to and what I haven’t.

Another great feature is the 5 band graphic equalizer. Many MP3 players allow you to pick from a list of equalizer settings such as Jazz, Rock, Pop, but the Muvo goes a step further and lets you actually edit each band individually. This makes it easy to turn down the low frequency if there’s too much bass on an old radio show or if there is a bit to much hiss you can lower the treble or the mid-range.

A lot of MP3 players make you install MP3 files via their software(e.g. the iPod makes you use iTunes). The Muvo comes with some software, but as yet I’ve not installed it. Instead I make use of the fact that it just plugs in and becomes a virtual hard drive. This means I can just select some shows I want to listen to and then copy them onto drive G. It couldn’t be easier.

The Muvo is VERY light and small which makes it ideal for taking to the gym, going for walks,or putting in your top pocket as you walk round the mall. You’ll forget it is there as it weighs next to nothing.

With the Muvo there’s no messing around with docking stations and USB leads. You just take off the cover and plug it straight into the USB slot. I don’t know whether it is the same with all computers, but mine just recognized it immediately and it appeared as drive G in My Computer. I was copying files to it within a minute of plugging in.

I could go on and on as there’s so much that’s good about this player, but I’ll give you just one more and that’s battery life. The Muvo is powered by a single AAA cell. The tech specs say it will last about 12 hours, but so far I’ve not replaced mine and I’ve been listening for over twenty hours so far.

Oh, I can’t resist. I’ve got to tell you about one more feature. The Muvo has a built in FM radio so when you’re not listening to classic shows from the 1940s you can listen to your favorite radio shows of today. You can even record the radio directly onto the player and listen again later. Isn’t that brilliant?

I've checked out the prices at J&R, my favorite electronics store (they deliver worldwide) and Amazon and J&R are slightly better with the 1 gig model coming in at just under $150, the 512 meg model at $110 and the 256 meg at about $80.

Here are the links to the appropriate pages at J&R.

If you prefer to go to Amazon here are the links to their site to save you having to look them up.

Ah well. I've got my Muvo fully loaded so I'm going to take myself on along walk and enjoy the shows. With 1GB's worth of listening I might be quite some time.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
