Let Yourself Go

Let Yourself Go

Let Your Self Go was a 30-minute variety show hosted by Milton Berle and supported by comedian Joe Besser.

Special guests, or sometimes members of the audience, were asked to share their secret ambitions, which could range from the bizarre to the ridiculous. They would then be asked to push all their dignity to one side and "let themselves go" and Merle would be their stooge or sidekick.

Now for the good news and bad news. Which do you want first? Let's go with the bad news.

The bad news is that only one episode of this series is known to be in existence.

The good news is that I've managed to track it down and have added it to RUSC today - and it's a real classic.

The guest star on this occasion is is none other than the great Al Jolson. He shares with us his altruistic ambition to show everybody a place where a fellow’s color, race or how much money he has got, doesn't make a bit of difference. And that place is a theater. His wish is for everybody to have the same chance as he did.

For all fans of Al Jolson this episode is a true delight. Sit back and be taken down memory lane with anecdotes from Jolson's life and musical interludes from several of his best-loved songs.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
