Le Jongleur de Notre Dame

Le Jongleur de Notre Dame

Christmas has always been rich in legend and story, and in today's special Christmas broadcast, starring Ronald Colman and Nelson Eddy, we bring you one of the most beautiful Christmas legends of all time...

Le Jongleur de Notre Dame is a religious miracle story by the French author Anatole France, published in 1892 and based on an old medieval legend.

Similar to the later Christmas carol The Little Drummer Boy, it tells the story of a juggler turned monk who has no gift to offer a statue of the Virgin Mary except for his ability to juggle well.

Upon doing so, he is accused of blasphemy by the other monks, but the statue comes to life and blesses him.

This particular broadcast from The Screen Guild Theater, is called The Juggler of Notre Dame, and stars a perfectly cast Ronald Colman and Nelson Eddy.

It was also made into an excellent movie in the 1980s, which Joy and I watch every Christmas Eve, and there's not a dry eye in the house whenever we do.

It's always surprised me that it wasn't more popular, as it's a wonderful story, with a superb message, and both Joy and I really recommend it for your listening pleasure over the holiday period.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
