Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day!

This coming Sunday, children across the world will honour their mother by giving presents, flowers, and cards as a token of thanks for their love and care.

What they probably don't know, is that it's exactly 100 years ago today, that Mother's Day was officially recognised.

The idea of a national celebration was introduced by Anna Jarvis, a young woman whose mother had passed away in May 1906.

A year after her death, Anna told a friend that she wished for a day which could be set aside to pay tribute to all mothers. This idea began to spread and gain support, with the first official Mother's Day ceremonies being held at Andrews Methodist in Grafton, WV (now the International Mother's Day Shrine), and Wanamaker's Store Auditorium, PA on May 10, 1908.

An incredible 15,000 people attended at Wanamaker's, 10,000 more than was expected, and it gave a real indication that Anna Jarvis' idea had tremendous support across the nation. It was John Wanamaker, a wealthy Philadelphia merchant and supporter of religious causes, who eventually carried the idea to congress, until at last, on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a congressional resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

On it's 100th anniversary, Joy and I would like to wish a very Happy Mother's Day to all those wonderful mothers throughout the world. This coming Sunday, don't feel guilty about putting your feet up. Sit back and enjoy the shows we've put together for you on RUSC to celebrate the day:-
