Fall is here in its full glory

Fall is here in its full glory

Well the crazy outfits from Halloween have been packed away for another year, and the baked seeds, soup and even the scrumptious pumpkin cake that Joy made, has all been polished off in the Norris household.

Whilst listening to one of the Fibber McGee and Molly shows over the weekend, I heard this at the end of the show:-

"With Halloween only a day away the trick or treat brigade is already on the prowl through the Fall night, and after you've opened your door a few times you'll know that Fall is here in its full glory.

For the sports minded, Fall is synonymous with college football. The cheering crowds, brightly colored Moms and the crisp air of a Saturday afternoon truly means football.

If you can't be there in person, be sure to join us here by your radio as the NBC Radio Network again brings you the top football game of the week. From the kick off to the final gun, you'll hear each and every play when you set your dial to NBC Radio these Fall Saturdays."

How I wish all of those shows had been recorded!

These days we have TV coverage on everything from obscure amateur sports through to massive national and international events, but in many ways sports coverage was as big back then as it is now with people crowding around the radio to enjoy everything from baseball to boxing.

TV offers a visual insight that radio couldn't possibly compete with, but in many ways radio provided a magical connection to events that sparked the imagination, got the adrenalin pumping, and brought people together.
Today we take it for granted that we can watch an event as it is happening, but when radio was king it was almost beyond comprehension that you could listen in to an event that was happening hundreds, or even thousands of miles away.

If you're a football fan, you'll find on RUSC a selection of NFL Broadcasts, and if you're a baseball fan, one of our wonderful friends of RUSC has donated their own collection of Dizzy Dean old time radio shows, both of which we'll be adding to throughout November.

Dizzy Dean was a pitcher in the 1930s and 40s, so for anyone who is suffering from major league baseball withdrawal, I'm sure that these broadcasts will be right up your street! The first in the series, Lefty Gomez, is now live on RUSC.

Continuing the sports theme, another series which always pops into my mind, although not focused entirely around sports is The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy, a 30 minute sitcom. Played by Frank Morgan, the Fabulous Dr. Tweedy was the absent-minded Doctor of Philosophy, Thaddeus Q. Tweedy, who got the boot from his previous college position for repeatedly flunking star players of the school's football team.

Sadly, of the 43 episodes created, there are only 7 episodes in existence, but these are available on the RUSC website. I've added a new one today called "The Athletic Trophies". They're great fun!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
