Elysian Fields

Elysian Fields

It's Father's Day at the weekend, and what better way is there to kick back and relax, than to watch a game of baseball?

I was recently reading a little about our national sport, and the history of the game, and coincidentally the date of the first official Baseball match actually fell on 19th June 1846 - exactly 170 years ago!

Alexander Cartwright, the father of Baseball, developed the basic rules of the game as we now know it - and had organised a new club in New York, called the Knickerbockers.

After a very lengthy search, Alexander discovered that there wasn't any land suitable for playing across the Hudson river in Manhattan, and so the Knickerbockers began to train at a little piece of land in Hoboken, New Jersey, called Elysian Fields.

Determined to succeed, they practised and practised playing the game under the rules set by Alexander, until finally, they were given the chance to play an opposing team, the New York Nines, where they were unfortunately defeated 23-1 in four innings!

There are lots of Baseball shows on RUSC, including a Baseball broadcast leading up to the opening of the 1949 Fort Worth Baseball Season

The recording begins with a brief history of how the game of Baseball began in America. This show opens the 53rd season of Baseball in the Texas League in the city of Fort Worth with the voice of Bob Jones presenting information and interviewing players and songs relating to Baseball. This show went out the day before the opening game, which was on 30th March 1949 in New Orleans.

If Baseball isn't your thing, this weekend on RUSC, you'll also find a collection of Father's Day shows. There's one show in particular which always makes me laugh. It's called Dollar Day, and it's from the series The Baby Snooks Show.

Here's a link to the Father's Day collection:-

Whether you're a dad, stepdad, father-in-law, uncle, big brother or grandfather, if you've brought up children or acted as a father figure to someone in their lives, we know you've been around through thick and thin - so whatever you choose to do this weekend, Joy and I hope you have a great time!

Happy listening!
