Christmas Sing With Bing

Christmas Sing With Bing

Bing Crosby was as much an institution of Christmas as Santa Claus during the 1950's.

Strangely, he was rumored to have despised it, but as a professional his Christmas show tradition began on radio in 1936, and ran all the way until the early 1960s when it transitioned over to television.

Among the more memorable of Bing's Christmas shows was the 1950 Chesterfield broadcast that featured Bing's wife, Dixie Lee, and his four boys. It was Dixie's only appearance with Bing on his radio program, which you can listen to on RUSC here:-

Following the end of his own radio variety show in May of 1954, Bing began hosting a series of hour-long radio Christmas specials called 'A Christmas Sing with Bing'.

The show I have added today is the seventh annual show of A Christmas Sing With Bing and was broadcast on Christmas Eve 1961. The show is opened by my favorite announcer, Ken Carpenter, who is soon joined by Bing Crosby to perform the first carol of the show called, Joy To The World.

I love to listen to the musical shows over the holiday period - the performances remind me what Christmas was really all about all of those years ago.

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
