Chase And Sanborn Halloween Episode

Chase And Sanborn Halloween Episode

I hope by now that you are enjoying the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde series, Joy and I certainly are. As it is All Hallows Day today I have added a couple of extra episodes to get you in the spirit (no pun intended, ha) of the day. I will continue to add them on a daily basis culminating with the final episode on Friday the 8th December. Hope you can wait that long!

Probably the most famous of all Halloween broadcasts is Mercury Theater On Air's production by Orson Welles of War Of The Worlds, which was aired on 30th October 1938. In a recent e-mail to us, friend of RUSC, Edward Lawler wrote and asked if we had the Chase and Sanborn Hour episode that was broadcast opposite it that night and we are pleased to be able to oblige!

Listed on RUSC as the Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy Show and hosted by Don Ameche this Halloween special of The Chase and Sanborn Hour features songs from Dorothy Lamour and Nelson Eddy and with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy in Ghost Story and Madeleine Carroll and Don Ameche in a short story entitled There’s Always a Juliet.

According to published reports, Welles knew exactly when the opening banter between Bergen and McCarthy would be over and the song by musical guest Nelson Eddy would begin, and he counted on listeners fiddling with their dials during that crucial three or so minutes, when the Mercury Theater would have a chance to capture their attention.

So, if you were one of the dial fiddlers who were thrilled by Orson Welles but who missed the fun on the Chase and Sanborn Hour now's your chance to hear it again after all these years!

Happy listening my friends,

Ned Norris
