People at home were beginning to realise that the struggle for freedom was linked up closely to the freedom of the seas. This was a new kind of war, the conquerors were trying to take in all the continents and all the seas. If they succeed then for the first time all men would be slaves as there would be no where to escape to, no ocean to escape across.
