Wuthering Heights

Broadcast: August 9, 1951

Written by Emily Bronte nearly two centuries ago in 1845-46 this is a timeless tragic love story which I never get tired of hearing. Set on the bleak moors of Yorkshire, England, This Screen Directors Playhouse adaptation of the Samuel Goldwyn Meyer motion picture version stars Dorothy McGuire as Cathy and James Mason as Heathcliff and is one of my favorite versions from old-time-radio.

When Cathy's father Mr Earnshaw brings Heathcliff in to their home as a young abandoned boy from Liverpool he wants him to live with them as a brother to Cathy and her brother Hindley. Cathy and Heathcliff grow a deep affection for each other but Hindley is jealous of Heathcliff and despises him. When their father dies and Hindley becomes master of the estate he turns Heathcliff out of the house as a servant forcing him to work in the stables. Cathy begs him to leave Wuthering Heights and make something of himself for despite her deep love for him she longs for a life of riches, parties and dancing.

When Cathy marries their rich neighbor Edgar Linton, Heathcliff finally leaves. Some years later having inherited a fortune, he returns, to seek his vengeance on Hindley, and Cathy but their love for each other is as strong as ever and not even death can part them.
