On December 15th 1945, after coming through World War II unscathed, if anyone had told marine pilot, Lieutenant Billy Howard, that this was his last day on earth as a living human being, he never would have believed them. Only his wife Joan, out of some deep psychic sense, which later was to be an important element in this story, had any advance warning. But even there, because Joan was younger and because to the circumstance that was to separate them was so strange, the signal garbled, jumbled and not strong enough for her to recognise its shocking import.
