'Scrappy' Simms lies injured on a couch in The Cafe Tambourine, shot and bleeding he gasps the words, "Nobody gets the white beetle." Before Rocky can do anything but call an ambulance for his stricken visitor a strange woman arrives with a pistol cocked and ready and a demand for the very thing that Scrappy was prepared to protect with his life. Very soon several newcomers arrive at The Cafe demanding to be given the white beetle (a scarab) and so the plot is made clear... a valuable Egyptian treasure has gone missing and everyone seems to think that Rocky Jordan has it. One thing is for sure though, that with an old friend in the morgue and people now gunning for him instead, Rocky Jordan may not have the white beetle now... but no-one's going to stand in the way of him finding it!
