Before the coming of the railroad supplies were carried to settlers in the Western United States by great canvas topped freight wagons. The men who drove these wagons followed well-marked trails but they were always faced with the danger of attack from Indians or outlaws. Against savages and gunmen their best protection was the masked rider of the plains. No one could match his strength and courage and it was his daring and resourcefulness that preserved the vital lifeline of the early west.
