After the Spanish-American war, the country of Puerto Rico was plagued with a mysterious illness which was taking the lives of the people. The so-called "muerte natural" was eventually cured by Dr Bailey Ashord, a military physician, who organized and conducted a parasite treatment campaign against hookworm, which cured approximately 300,000 people, and reduced the death rate from the associated anemia.
