The train from Colfax, drawn by its snorting, wood burning engine, rattled past the last spur of the blue sage hills, and settled down to the last thirty miles of windswept prairie that laid between it and its destination at River Junction. River Junction meant fame and possible promotion, because seated opposite him with manacled hands, was Slim Rafferty, the most notorious outlaw known to the territory.
