The white thatched community sat quietly sweltering under a broiling South American sun as a battered taxi swerved off the highway in a cloud of thick red dust and clattered up the main street. Larry Sands sat huddled in the rear seat wishing he was back at his desk in the offices of Pacific Airways in San Francisco. Nervously he puffed on his cigarette and his eyes shifted from one side of the street to the other searching the faces, peering on to doorways, probing the shadows.
