Ethan Vigil a clock maker by trade purchases a strange hourglass shaped clock from a sailor. The numerals 13 are in the place where 12 should be and he discovers and although he tries to repair it he cannot seems to get it to work. However when his wife tries to fix the clock she cuts her finger on it and the clock miraculously begins to work with a sound like a beating heart.
